There has been some risky, self-congratulatory cheer from politicians in the last few days after signs their stimulus measures are finally having an effect. But even the punchiest optimist has yet to suggest that everything is OK in the banking system. The FSA has gone as far as to say that Barclays has enough capital to withstand a severe recession, but most people still see significant risks ahead for the sector. | |

UK interest rates reached a new low in March as the Bank of England (BoE) cut rates from 1% to 0.5%. The cut, which was widely expected, brings interest rates even closer to zero, reducing the BoE’s scope to boost economic activity through monetary policy. | |
